Office Cleaning Checklist for NYC: DSNY Recycling Rules and What to Clean
Pubblicato: Ottobre 29, 2026
New York offices work hard. Hundreds of people can pass through a single lobby before 9 a.m., the subway and street grime come in on every pair of shoes, and the city has strict rules about how a business separates and sets out its trash and recycling. This office cleaning checklist for NYC covers what to clean every visit, weekly and monthly, how DSNY’s business recycling rules affect your cleaning routine, and how to book background-checked cleaners for your office.
What makes office cleaning in New York City different
Recycling rules apply to every business
The NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) says all businesses in the city must recycle certain materials by law, including offices. Metal, glass, rigid plastic and beverage cartons, and paper and cardboard all have to be kept out of the trash, and recyclables can never be collected in the same bag or bin as trash (DSNY Recycling for Businesses). Business tenants also have to post recycling signs in common areas and use labeled containers so staff and visitors know what goes where.
That matters for cleaning. When your cleaner empties bins, recycling and trash need to go into separate bags, not one big bag at the end of the night. Clearly labeled bins at every desk cluster and in the kitchen make that fast and keep you on the right side of the rules.
Set-out times and bins
If your office puts waste at the curb, DSNY’s setout rules say trash, food and food-soiled paper must go in bins with secure lids, set out 1 hour before closing or after 8 p.m. Bins must be brought back in by the time you reopen, and cardboard and newspaper must be bundled (DSNY Setout Rules). DSNY lists fines for wrong setouts and for not separating recycling. Many offices are in buildings where management handles this, but if you’re in a storefront or small building, plan your cleaning schedule around your carter’s pickup.
Private carters and commercial waste zones
DSNY doesn’t collect commercial waste. Businesses hire a licensed private carter, and under the Commercial Waste Zones program, businesses in zones that have launched must use one of the carters assigned to their zone (DSNY Businesses). Your carter’s pickup method (source-separated, co-collection or single-stream) decides how your recycling should be sorted, so share it with your cleaner.
Heavy foot traffic and small spaces
Many NYC offices pack a lot of people into a small footprint. Shared desks, a single kitchenette and one or two restrooms get heavy use, and grit from the street and subway shows up on entry floors and carpets fast, especially in winter when sidewalks are salted.
The NYC office cleaning checklist
Every visit
- Empty trash and recycling into separate bags, replace liners and bundle flattened cardboard
- Wipe desks and work surfaces that are clear (don’t move papers or laptops)
- Wipe high-touch points: door handles, push bars, light switches, elevator buttons inside your suite, printer panels and shared phones
- Clean restrooms: toilets, sinks, mirrors, fixtures and floors, and refill soap, paper towels and toilet paper
- Clean the kitchenette: counters, sink, microwave inside and out, table tops, coffee station
- Vacuum carpets and mop hard floors, starting with the entry and reception
- Spot-clean glass doors and conference room glass
Every week
- Dust shelves, window sills, partition tops and monitor tops (dry microfiber on electronics)
- Wipe chair arms and conference room chairs
- Clean the outside of the fridge and toss expired food if that’s agreed with the office
- Wipe trash and recycling bins, and check that labels and signs are still in place
- Vacuum under desks and along edges
Every month
- Dust vents, light fixtures and the tops of tall furniture
- Wipe baseboards and door frames
- Clean inside the fridge and microwave fully
- Descale the kitchenette sink, faucet and coffee maker
- Deep vacuum entry mats and high-traffic carpet lanes
Tips for keeping a New York office clean between visits
- Put bins in pairs. A trash bin next to a labeled recycling bin at every cluster makes sorting automatic for staff and faster for your cleaner.
- Use a good entry mat. A long walk-off mat inside the door catches street grit and winter salt before it reaches your carpet.
- Clear desks on cleaning nights. Cleaners wipe what’s clear. A clear-desk habit means every surface gets cleaned.
- Share the carter details. Tell your cleaner your carter’s recycling method and pickup times so bags are sorted and ready.
- Schedule after hours. Booking evening or early-morning cleans avoids working around staff and fits most NYC building access rules. Check with building management on freight elevator and access hours.

NYC office cleaning FAQ
Do NYC offices have to recycle?
Yes. DSNY says all businesses, including offices, must separate metal, glass, rigid plastic, beverage cartons, paper and cardboard from trash, post recycling signs and use labeled containers.
Will cleaners separate our recycling?
Yes. Your cleaner empties trash and recycling into separate bags. Tell us in the booking notes how your carter collects recycling, for example single-stream or two separate streams.
How often should an NYC office be cleaned?
Busy offices usually need cleaning several times a week, with restrooms and kitchens done every visit. Small offices with a few people often do well with a weekly clean.
Can you clean after hours?
Yes. You choose the date and time when you book. Check your building’s access and elevator rules, and leave entry instructions in the app.
Do cleaners take our trash to the curb?
They can usually bag it and move it to your building’s trash room or set-out spot. If you set bins at the curb yourself, follow DSNY’s set-out times: 1 hour before closing or after 8 p.m.
