Looking for cleaning services in Minnesota? Five months of snow and road salt, hard groundwater in many suburbs and a lake-cabin season that fills weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day all shape how Minnesota homes get dirty. This guide covers what Minnesota homes need, how often to book, what the state’s deposit rules mean at move-out, and where to book background-checked Cleanster cleaners, starting with Minneapolis.

What makes house cleaning in Minnesota different

Road salt and long winters

Minnesota spreads a lot of salt. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency estimates that roughly 445,000 tons of chloride-containing salt go onto paved surfaces across the state each year (MPCA news release), and it warns that just one teaspoon of salt permanently pollutes five gallons of water (MPCA: Chloride). Some of that salt comes home on boots, paws and stroller wheels.

Inside, salt dries into a white film on tile, vinyl and hardwood. Grit under it acts like sandpaper. From November into April, entries, mudrooms, the first few feet of hallway and the floor under the coat rack need attention on every visit. The right order is to vacuum the grit first, then damp-mop the film with a neutral cleaner, then dry the floor so salty water does not sit on wood.

Hard water that depends on your address

Minnesota water ranges from soft to very hard, depending on your address. The Minnesota Department of Health says a softener may be worth considering when hardness is above about 7 grains per gallon (MDH: Home Water Softening FAQ). Many suburbs and private wells draw harder groundwater. Minneapolis is the exception people notice: the city treats Mississippi River water and softens it with lime to roughly 5 grains per gallon. That same water also serves several nearby suburbs (Golden Valley: Water System).

What it means for cleaning: if you are on groundwater or a well, expect spotted shower glass, scale around faucet bases and cloudy film on fixtures. A descaler with real dwell time and a squeegee after showers do more than scrubbing harder. Softened homes still get soap scum, just less mineral crust.

Closed-up houses and dry winter air

When windows stay shut from late fall to spring, dust settles on baseboards, vents, radiator tops and ceiling-fan blades faster than people expect. Forced-air heat moves it around. A recurring clean that dusts high to low and vacuums vents and returns keeps rooms from feeling stale by February.

Lake cabins and summer rentals

The state counts 11,842 lakes of 10 acres or more (Minnesota DNR: Lakes, rivers and wetlands facts). Many lake homes and cabins double as short-term rentals in summer, with tight Saturday changeovers, sand at every door and lake towels in the laundry. Hosts can use Cleanster for Airbnb and vacation rental cleaning. If you bring your own cleaner, see short-term rental pricing for the host software.

How often should Minnesota homes book?

  • Every week: families with kids or pets, and homes that track salt in daily all winter.
  • Every 2 weeks: the most common choice for keeping kitchens and bathrooms under control.
  • Every 3 or 4 weeks: smaller homes, condos and one- or two-person households.
  • Seasonally: a deep clean after the spring thaw, before the holidays, or before you start a recurring plan.

Moving out of a Minnesota rental

Minnesota gives renters two useful rights at move-out. First, landlords must return the deposit with interest, or send a written statement of why they kept part of it, within three weeks after the tenancy ends. They can only deduct unpaid rent or what it costs to restore the unit, minus ordinary wear and tear (Minn. Stat. 504B.178). Second, since 2023 the landlord must tell you that you can ask for a move-out inspection, no earlier than five days before you leave. That inspection gives you a chance to fix problems before they come out of your deposit (Minn. Stat. 504B.182).

The practical plan: book move-out cleaning once the unit is empty. Ask for the inspection after the clean, take dated photos, and keep your receipt. Moving into a new place? A Make-Ready clean before the boxes arrive is easier than cleaning around them.

Room-by-room priorities for Minnesota homes

  • Entry and mudroom: shake mats outside, vacuum grit, damp-mop salt film, wipe boot trays and the bottom of the door.
  • Badezimmer: descale glass and faucets, scrub grout, dust the exhaust fan cover and leave surfaces dry.
  • Küche: degrease near the range, wipe appliance fronts and handles, and clean the sink last.
  • Living areas: dust radiators and baseboard heaters when cool, wipe window sills, and vacuum floor vents and returns.
  • Basements and lower levels: dust and vacuum finished spaces that get used more in winter.
