Deep Cleaning Checklist for Dallas Homes: Hard Water, Dust & More

A deep clean in Dallas is a different job from a deep clean in a cooler, softer-water city. North Texas homes keep the windows shut and the air conditioning running for much of the year, so fine dust collects on vents, fans and blinds. And the water that comes out of Dallas taps is hard, which means mineral film builds up on glass, faucets and shower tile faster than many people expect. This deep cleaning checklist for Dallas homes walks through what to tackle, room by room, and what to ask for when you book a professional deep clean.

Why Dallas homes need a deep clean, not just a tidy-up

Regular cleaning handles the surfaces you touch every day. A deep clean goes after the build-up that regular visits skip: baseboards, grout, cabinet fronts, inside appliances and the tops of door frames. In Dallas, two local factors make that build-up worse.

Hard water leaves its mark

In a December 2023 memo to a City Council committee, Dallas Water Utilities answered the question “Do we have hard water?” with a simple “Yes,” and put the city’s water hardness at 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate (City of Dallas memo). That’s roughly 7 to 9 grains per gallon. Hard water is safe to drink, but the calcium and magnesium it carries dry into white spots on shower glass, crusty rings around faucets, cloudy dishes and scale inside kettles and showerheads. Soap also lathers less in hard water, so soap scum forms faster.

Hard-water deposits don’t wipe off with an all-purpose spray. They need an acidic cleaner (or diluted white vinegar on surfaces that can take it), time to dwell, and a non-scratch pad. That is exactly the kind of slow, detailed work a deep clean is for.

Closed windows and constant AC

When a house is sealed up against the heat for months, dust recirculates instead of blowing out. It settles on ceiling fan blades, air return grilles, blind slats, picture frames and the tops of kitchen cabinets. A deep clean is the time to get all of those, from the top of the room down.

The Dallas deep cleaning checklist

Work top to bottom and back to front, so dust falls onto areas you haven’t cleaned yet and floors come last.

Every room

  • Ceiling fan blades, light fixtures and the tops of door frames
  • Air vents and return grilles (dust the face; leave filter changes to you or your HVAC pro)
  • Blinds, window frames and sills
  • Baseboards, doors and light switches
  • Vacuum, including edges and under furniture you can reach, then mop hard floors
  • Empty and wipe out trash bins

Cocina

  • Degrease the stovetop, range hood and the cabinet fronts closest to the stove
  • Descale the faucet, sink and any hard-water ring around the drain
  • Wipe cabinets and drawers inside and out (empty them first if you want the insides done)
  • Clean the outside of appliances; add inside the fridge, oven or microwave as extras
  • Scrub countertops and backsplash grout lines

Baños

  • Toilet first, then sink, then tub and shower, so germs from the toilet stay away from cleaner surfaces
  • Apply a hard-water remover to glass doors, tile and fixtures and let it dwell before scrubbing
  • Scrub grout and remove mildew in corners and along caulk lines
  • Polish mirrors and chrome so they dry without water spots
  • Wipe cabinets and drawers inside and out

Bedrooms and living areas

  • Dust high shelves, headboards, lamps and electronics (dry cloth only on screens)
  • Vacuum upholstery and under cushions
  • Wipe window tracks, which collect dust and dead insects in Texas summers

Hard-water tips that keep the deep clean looking new

  • Squeegee the shower glass after each use. Ten seconds stops most spotting before it starts.
  • Dry chrome after cleaning with a microfiber cloth. Water left to evaporate is what leaves spots.
  • Soak the showerhead in a bag of white vinegar every month or two to keep the nozzles flowing.
  • Test first. Acids can etch natural stone like marble and travertine. Use a stone-safe cleaner on those surfaces.
  • Book regular cleans after the deep clean. Once the build-up is gone, a standard clean keeps it from coming back.

How often should you deep clean a Dallas home?

Most homes do well with a deep clean every few months, plus one before switching to a regular plan, before hosting family, after a renovation or when you move into a new place. Homes with pets, allergies or lots of foot traffic may want one more often. Between deep cleans, a weekly or every-two-weeks standard clean keeps dust and soap scum under control.

Dallas deep cleaning FAQ

Is Dallas water really hard?
Yes. Dallas Water Utilities says the city’s water is hard, at 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate (about 7 to 9 grains per gallon). It’s safe, but it leaves spots and scale on glass, fixtures and tile.

What’s the difference between a deep clean and a regular clean?
A regular clean covers the surfaces you use every day. A deep clean adds time for build-up and details such as baseboards, grout, blinds, cabinet fronts and inside appliances on request.

How long does a deep clean take?
It depends on the size and condition of your home. Every booking has a 2-hour minimum, and the app suggests hours based on your bedrooms and bathrooms. Larger or neglected homes take longer.

Do Cleanster cleaners bring supplies?
Yes, if you add the bring-supplies option when you book. A vacuum, mop and broom are not included, so have those available.

Can a deep clean remove all hard-water stains?
Most fresh spots and soap scum come off with the right cleaner and dwell time. Deposits that have etched glass or stone over years may not come off fully, and your cleaner won’t use anything that could damage the surface.
