The oven and the fridge are the two kitchen jobs everyone puts off. They’re slow, a little gross and easy to ignore because the doors stay shut. But a dirty oven smokes and makes food taste burnt, and a fridge that hasn’t been cleaned in months can smell and spoil food faster. This guide gives you simple step-by-step oven cleaning and fridge cleaning methods you can do yourself, how often to do them, and what to expect when you add them to a professional clean.

How often to clean your oven and fridge

  • Oven: wipe spills once the oven cools, and give the inside a full clean every 3 to 6 months, or before a big cooking event like the holidays.
  • Fridge: throw out old food and wipe spills weekly, and do a full shelf-by-shelf clean every 3 to 4 months.
  • Freezer: clean when you clean the fridge, or when ice builds up.

How to deep clean an oven (DIY)

You’ll need baking soda, water, a spray bottle of white vinegar, a non-scratch scrub pad, a plastic scraper, microfiber cloths and gloves. Always follow your oven’s manual, and never use a commercial oven cleaner on a self-cleaning oven’s interior unless the manufacturer says it’s safe.

  1. Turn it off and let it cool. Remove the racks, thermometer and anything else inside.
  2. Soak the racks. Put them in a bathtub or large sink with hot water and dish soap. Lay an old towel underneath to protect the tub.
  3. Make a paste. Mix about half a cup of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water until it spreads like frosting.
  4. Coat the inside. Spread the paste over the walls, floor and inside of the door, avoiding the heating elements and gas openings. Leave it for several hours or overnight.
  5. Wipe and scrape. Use a damp cloth and the plastic scraper to lift the paste and grime.
  6. Spray vinegar on what’s left. It fizzes with the baking soda and helps lift the last residue. Wipe again with a clean, damp cloth.
  7. Scrub the racks, rinse and dry them before you put them back.
  8. Clean the glass door. Use the same paste on the inside glass, then a glass cleaner on the outside.

Safety: open a window, wear gloves, and never mix cleaning products, especially bleach with vinegar or ammonia.

How to deep clean a fridge (DIY)

  1. Empty it. Put perishables in a cooler with ice packs. Check every date and throw out what’s expired.
  2. Remove shelves and drawers. Let glass shelves come to room temperature before washing so they don’t crack.
  3. Wash them in warm water with dish soap. Dry completely.
  4. Wipe the inside. Use a mix of warm water and baking soda (about 2 tablespoons per quart, or per litre) top to bottom. It cleans without leaving a chemical smell near food.
  5. Clean the door seals. Use an old toothbrush in the folds, then dry. Dirty seals let cold air escape.
  6. Put it back together. Replace shelves, restock, and wipe jars and bottles before they go back in.
  7. Wipe the outside, handles and the top of the fridge.
  8. Keep it fresh. Leave an open box of baking soda on a shelf.

Oven and fridge cleaning as cleaning add-ons

If you’d rather not spend an afternoon on your knees in front of the oven, you can have a cleaner do it. On Cleanster, the published extras you can add to a standard clean are:

  • Inside the oven
  • Inside the fridge
  • Interior dos armários
  • Janelas interiores
  • Laundry (wash and dry)

You add them on the Add Extras screen when you book. Each extra adds time to your booking, and the cost of that time, so your price goes up by the extra time it takes. You see the full price before you confirm. A standard clean covers the outside of the stove, oven and fridge; on a standard clean, the inside is the extra.

UM limpeza profunda includes the inside of the oven and the fridge, so you don’t need to add them as extras. It also goes further on appliances, including degreasing the stovetop and range hood. Moving? A move-out clean includes inside cabinets and appliances in the empty home.

How to get the most from oven and fridge add-ons

  • Empty the fridge first or leave a note saying what can be moved. A cleaner can clean around food, but an empty fridge gets a better clean in less time.
  • Turn the oven off a few hours before so it’s cool when the cleaner arrives.
  • Leave notes in the app about self-cleaning ovens, special finishes or products you want used.
  • Pair the extras with the right clean. Add them to a standard clean for a once-a-season refresh, or book them with a deep clean before hosting.
  • Choose supplies. Use your own products, or pay for “Bring your cleaning supplies” when you book. Supplies don’t include a vacuum, mop or broom.

What it costs

A 2-hour standard clean starts from $122 and a 2-hour deep clean starts from $126. Prices vary by location, home size and clean type, every booking has a 2-hour minimum, and extras like inside the oven or fridge add time to your booking. See home cleaning pricing.

Every cleaner is background-checked by ClearChecks, passes an ID check and has 3 or more references checked, and every clean is covered by our 48-hour Happiness Guarantee. Book limpeza de casas ou limpeza de apartamentos.
