Austin Apartment Cleaning Checklist: Weekly, Monthly and Move-Out Tasks
Nai-publish: Nobyembre 2, 2026
Austin apartments get dirty in their own way. The AC runs for most of the year, so dust and pet hair cycle through vents and settle on blinds. Kitchens are small and busy. Balconies collect cedar pollen in winter and grit all summer. And with so many leases turning over around UT and across the city every summer, plenty of renters end up cleaning a unit for move-out on a deadline. This Austin apartment cleaning checklist covers what to clean weekly, monthly and before you hand back the keys, plus the Austin rules and quirks that change the job.
Weekly Austin apartment cleaning checklist
Kusina
- Wipe counters, backsplash and cabinet fronts, starting with the dirtiest spot near the stove
- Degrease the stovetop and the range hood filter edge
- Clean the sink and faucet, then wipe the faucet dry to stop water spots
- Wipe the microwave inside and out, and the fridge handles
- Empty trash, recycling and food scraps, and wipe the bins
- Sweep and mop the floor, getting into the gap by the fridge
Banyo
- Spray the tub, shower and toilet first so the cleaner can sit while you do the mirror and counter
- Scrub the toilet inside and out, including the base and behind it
- Rinse and squeegee or dry shower glass and fixtures
- Replace towels and empty the trash
- Mop the floor last, working toward the door
Living areas and bedrooms
- Dust high to low: ceiling fan blades, shelves, TV stand, then furniture
- Wipe light switches, door handles and remotes
- Vacuum rugs, carpet and under furniture you can reach
- Change bed linens
- Sweep the balcony or patio and shake out the door mat
Monthly tasks that matter in Austin
- AC vents and returns. Wipe or vacuum supply vents and the return grille. Austin apartments run the AC for months at a time, and a dusty return spreads dust back into every room.
- Blinds and window sills. Most apartment windows have mini blinds, and they collect dust fast. Wipe the sills and vacuum the window tracks too.
- Sliding door track. Vacuum the balcony door track, then wipe it with a damp cloth.
- Baseboards and door frames. Pet hair and dust build up along carpet edges.
- Descale fixtures. Austin Water’s 2025 report lists an average total hardness of 93 mg/L, about 5.4 grains per gallon (Austin Water). It’s moderately hard, enough to leave spots and light scale on showerheads and faucets if they air-dry.
- Inside the fridge and microwave. Toss old food and wipe the shelves.
- Washer and dryer. If your unit has them, clean the lint trap housing and wipe the washer gasket.
Austin-specific things to plan for
Cedar season on the balcony
Mountain cedar (Ashe juniper) pollen usually starts in mid-December and peaks in mid-January. If you have a balcony, keep the sliding door shut on high-pollen days, wipe the railing and patio furniture, and clean the door track and sill more often. Pollen tracked in on shoes ends up in carpet, so vacuum entry areas weekly.
Recycling and composting at Austin apartments
Under Austin’s Universal Recycling Ordinance, apartment and condo properties with five or more units must give residents access to recycling, and since October 1, 2024, composting too. Composting at these properties accepts food scraps, food-soiled paper and BPI-certified compostable products (Austin Resource Recovery). Keep a small, lidded scrap container in the kitchen and empty it every couple of days. It keeps the kitchen trash from smelling in the heat and keeps food waste out of your regular bin.
Summer lease turnover
Summer is the busiest moving season in Austin, especially in student-heavy areas near UT. Cleaners book up quickly around the end of the month, so schedule a move-out clean as soon as you know your move date.
Austin apartment move-out cleaning checklist
A move-out clean happens in an empty unit, so everything you couldn’t reach while you lived there becomes visible. Add these to the weekly list:
- Inside every cabinet and drawer, and the shelf liners
- Inside the oven, the oven drawer and the fridge, including the seals
- Range hood, light fixtures and ceiling fan
- Baseboards, doors, door frames and closet shelves
- Scuffs on walls (spot clean only, and test first)
- Inside windows, sills, tracks and blinds
- Shower glass, grout, tub and the bathroom exhaust fan cover
- Washer, dryer and lint trap area if the unit has them
- Balcony, patio and any storage closet
Texas law gives renters some protection here. Under Texas Property Code Section 92.104, a landlord can’t keep any part of the deposit for normal wear and tear, and deductions need a written, itemized list. Section 92.103 gives the landlord 30 days after you move out to refund the deposit, and under Section 92.107 they don’t have to until you give a forwarding address in writing (Texas Property Code). Take dated photos of every room after the final clean. This is general information, not legal advice.
Landlords and property managers getting a unit ready for the next resident can book Make-Ready cleaning instead. See how Make-Ready cleaning works.

Austin apartment cleaning FAQ
How often should I clean my Austin apartment?
Do the weekly checklist every week, and the monthly tasks once a month. During cedar season, or if you have pets, vacuum and dust more often.
How long does it take to clean a one-bedroom apartment?
A routine clean of a tidy one-bedroom usually fits within the 2-hour minimum. Move-out and deep cleans take longer, and the app suggests hours based on your rooms and bathrooms.
Does my Austin apartment complex have to offer composting?
If it has five or more units, yes. Since October 1, 2024, Austin’s Universal Recycling Ordinance requires multifamily properties to give residents access to composting as well as recycling.
Can my Texas landlord charge me for cleaning?
They can deduct for cleaning beyond normal wear and tear, with a written, itemized list. Leaving the unit clean and photographed is the best protection.
Can a cleaner get into my building if I’m not home?
Yes, if you leave access instructions. Add your gate code, entrance and parking details in the booking notes for Apartment & Condo cleanings.
