House Cleaning Job Duties: What a Professional House Cleaner Does, Room by Room
Published: November 1, 2026
Thinking about becoming a house cleaner, or writing your own house cleaning job description? It helps to know exactly what the work involves. House cleaning job duties go well beyond “dust and vacuum.” A professional cleaner follows a set order, knows what’s included in each type of clean, and spots and reports problems without trying to fix them. This guide breaks down house cleaning job duties room by room, with realistic time targets and the habits that help cleaners get 5-star ratings and repeat clients on the CleansterPro app.
Core house cleaning job duties
On a typical standard clean, a house cleaner is responsible for:
- Dusting all reachable surfaces, from shelves and furniture to light switches and baseboards
- Cleaning mirrors and glass fixtures
- Washing and sanitizing toilets, showers, tubs and sinks
- Cleaning the outside of kitchen appliances, including the stove, oven and fridge
- Emptying the sink and loading dirty dishes into the dishwasher
- Vacuuming and mopping all floor surfaces
- Taking out trash and recycling
- Following the client’s notes and any custom checklist on the booking
This matches Cleanster’s guideline in What needs to be cleaned?. Always read the booking first. Some clients have a custom checklist or ask for certain rooms to be done first.
House cleaning duties room by room (with time targets)
Time targets help you pace a 2-hour or longer job. Adjust for home size and condition, but use these as a starting point:
Kitchen (20 to 30 minutes)
- Spray the stovetop, sink and any sticky spots first, then let the cleaner sit while you clear counters.
- Load the dishwasher and start it so the machine works while you do.
- Wipe counters, backsplash and cabinet fronts, top to bottom.
- Clean the outside of the oven, fridge, microwave and dishwasher.
- Scrub and shine the sink, then do the floor last.

Bathrooms (10 to 15 minutes each)
- Spray the toilet, shower and tub as soon as you walk in.
- Work in a set order: toilet, then sink, then shower or tub. Use a separate cloth color for each area so nothing cross-contaminates.
- Clean mirrors and fixtures, dust surfaces, empty trash and finish with the floor.

Living room (15 to 20 minutes)
- Pick up and straighten clutter first so you can actually clean surfaces.
- Dust top to bottom: shelves, picture frames, lamps, TV stand, then baseboards.
- Wipe glass tables, fluff and straighten cushions, then vacuum.
Bedrooms (10 to 15 minutes each)
- Make the bed or change linens if the client asks and leaves fresh sheets out.
- Dust nightstands, dressers and window sills, and wipe mirrors.
- Empty trash and vacuum, working from the back of the room toward the door.
Laundry, hallways and entry (5 to 10 minutes each)
- Wipe the washer and dryer tops and clear lint if requested.
- Dust railings, light switches and door frames.
- Vacuum or mop high-traffic floors last, so you don’t walk over them.
Extras and what isn’t included
Some jobs include extras the client added at booking. Most extras add about 30 minutes. Common ones are:
- Inside cabinets
- Inside the fridge and inside the oven (included in a Deep clean, extras on a Standard clean)
- Laundry wash and dry
- Interior windows
Some tasks aren’t part of a Cleanster job: exterior window cleaning, deep stain removal, pest or insect treatment and mold removal. If a client asks for one of these, politely explain that it isn’t included.
The professional habits behind great reviews
Skills matter, but so do the habits that make a cleaner reliable:
- Top to bottom, back to front. Dust falls, so clean high surfaces first and finish each room at the door.
- Declutter first. Clearing surfaces before you clean is faster than cleaning around things.
- One caddy, one trip. Carry everything you need for a room in one go. See our guide to what to keep in your cleaning caddy.
- Fold microfiber into eighths. One cloth gives you many clean sides before you need a fresh one.
- Work in a loop. Move through the home in one direction so you never double back.
- Don’t clean what isn’t dirty. Spend the time where it shows.

Report it, don’t fix it
An important part of the job is noticing problems and telling the client, not trying to repair them yourself. Report these through the app’s messages with a photo:
- Leaks under sinks, around toilets or from appliances
- Outlets or lights that don’t work
- Damage to walls, floors, furniture or fixtures, including anything broken during the clean
- Signs of pests
- Security issues, such as a lock that won’t latch or a window that won’t close
Safety duties
- Never mix cleaning products, especially bleach with ammonia or acids.
- Wear gloves, and a face mask when using strong products. Cleanster recommends both. See what to wear to a job.
- Keep rooms ventilated, and use a step stool rather than standing on furniture.
- Watch for wet floors. Mop toward the door so you finish on a dry surface.
End-of-job checklist
- Do a final walkthrough of every room on the booking.
- Take out all trash and recycling.
- Restock anything the client leaves out, like toilet paper or trash bags.
- Set the thermostat and lights back the way you found them.
- Take your after photos, then lock up as instructed.
